I began coaching in early 2018 and since then have been involved in the sport in just about every capacity, from an athlete and coach, to a referee and competition director.
Underpinning my skillset as a coach, I have a BSc in Sports & Exercise Science and an MSc in Sports Biomechanics. I am currently a PhD candidate, conducting research on barbell velocity in the squat, bench and deadlift. Beyond my academic work, I have also written for and worked with a range of platforms, including Powerlifting Technique and Kinetic Analytics.
My coaching is client orientated with a prominent focus on developing technical prowess and establishing trends in performance. I believe coaching needs to be fully individualised, from programming to suit a lifters varying training demands and lifestyle influences to catering technique to an individuals strengths and movement capabilities.
I am currently recruiting participants for my research assessing the validity and reliability of commercial available devices and applications to measure barbell velocity, and the effects of relative strength and technique on velocity in the deadlift.
Participants are required to be 18-49 years old, have a minimum of 2 years resistance training experience, have competed in powerlifting, be injury and illness free and be WADA compliant.
Testing consists of a single visit to the University of Bedfordshire Performance Labs, where you would be required to complete a 1RM deadlift protocol while wearing a full body marker set.
If you are interested in more information, or potentially participating, please contract me with any questions at jacob.wymer@study.beds.ac.uk
As a coach Jacob listens to any issues with my training and puts forward improvements for me to make. He further explains what he is doing in order to help me understand the necessary adjustments. This extra knowledge helps me to improve as a lifter, not only from week to week but set to set, as I can take more responsibility with my technique.

I’ve only positive things to say about Jacob and his coaching. His pragmatic and reasoned approach to my training has seen me make fantastic strength gains and facilitated considerable skill acquisition in the big three movements.
Of most note, is Jacob’s malleability. Of my almost 3 years of coaching with Jacob, one was spent in lockdown, with me travelling and being locked down and isolated on numerous occasions. Jacob adapted incredibly quickly to ensure my training wasn’t impacted and momentum was kept up.
Jacob also practices what he preaches, with an impressive record of competing and background in biomechanics. I could not recommend him enough.
In the time that I have been working with Jacob, I feel that my performance has gone from strength to strength. From the outset, I have been not just coached but educated in a truly collaborative coach-athlete dialogue.
Every decision regarding my training, from block length to accessory selection and intensity, has been explained to me, giving me the tools to further my understanding of the mechanisms behind getting stronger.
I would not hesitate to recommend EST to anyone looking to level up their powerlifting game.
